1838 GR-14 Reeded Edge Bust half dollar, NGC MS61. Full, satiny luster, a great strike and the true allure of complete originality. The rich, golden iridescent toning is superb and the coin's eye appeal is simply outstanding. The Reeded Edge half dollars in this condition and with this level of eye appeal are way tougher to find than the earlier, Lettered Edge coins. This is really a big ask for a magnificent type set, or your incredible date set...or even for an off-the-charts Graham Reiver die variety set! But, here it is, ready to go! There is a medium size chip at the bottom of the holder, for those who care about that sort of thing. But, the integrity of the holder nor the coin are affected in any way.
Speaking of die varieties, there is a fairly new book that has greatly expanded the collectability of this series - and is something that the numismatic world has needed for a very long time. Written and published by BHNC member and Reeded Edge half dollar specialist Dick Graham, "A Registry of Die Varieties of Reeded Edge Half Dollars, 1836 - 1839", made its debut in 2012. It is a completely new, accurate and very user-friendly attribution guide on this series that also includes much historical background information. Though it is an absolute must for your numismatic library, it has been sold out for several years. If you happen to have a copy for sale, please get in touch with us. Nobody will pay you more for one (or as many as you have!) than we will! By the way, GR stands for Graham/Reiver, after Dick's good friend and mentor Jules Reiver.
DavidKahnRareCoins is your source for scarce, rare and high-quality collector coins. We are members of all leading numismatic organizations, including the ANA (Life 6503) and the prestigious Professional Numismatists Guild, better known as the PNG (David L.
